NAVIGATING THE NEWS: AN INSIDER’S VIEW OF THE INFORMATION AGE
David Westin, former President, ABC News and President and Chief Executive Officer, NewsRight LLC

In the first decade of the 21st century, there was no shortage of ground-breaking news in the United States—the Bush-Gore presidential election, the 9/11 attacks, the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, and the global financial crisis. As president of ABC News during this tumultuous time, David Westin presided over the challenges of network television in an era of tectonic change for the media industry and the way Americans received news. Having faced the outset of the digital media revolution and the increased need to provide quality news coverage in an ever complex media landscape, Westin joins The Chicago Council to discuss his insider view of network news, the ethical dilemmas of modern journalism, and how ordinary citizens should navigate the information age.

David Westin is the president and CEO of NewsRight. Previously, Westin served as the president of ABC News from 1997 to 2010, overseeing the launch of ABCNews.com and ABC News Now, the first live, streaming, twenty-four hour news service. During his tenure, ABC News earned eleven George Foster Peabody Awards, thirteen Alfred I. DuPont Awards, four George Polk Awards, more than forty News & Documentary Emmys, and more than forty Edward R. Murrow Awards. Prior to ABC News, Westin was president of the ABC Television Network, a partner and associate at Wilmer, Cutler & Pickering in Washington, and a law clerk for U.S. Supreme Court Justice Lewis F. Powell. He received his B.A. and J.D. from the University of Michigan.

His book, Exit Interview, will be available for purchase and signing following the program.
