THE FUTURE OF CAPITALISM
Luigi Zingales, Robert C. McCormack Professor of Entrepreneurship and Finance and David G. Booth Faculty Fellow, University of Chicago Booth School of Business

The global financial crisis has shaken the very core of Western capitalism. The recession and bailouts on both sides of the Atlantic, the ongoing European sovereign debt crisis and banking scandals, and the existence of alternate economic models—in countries such as China or Russia—have raised questions about the viability of the Western economic system. America was once known as the land of opportunity, but today some are wondering if that is still true. This backlash takes many forms, as illustrated by the Occupy and Tea Party movements. What can be done to reform the system? What role should governments, businesses, and citizens play? Please join us for the second program in our fall 2012 Global Economy Series with Luigi Zingales, as he discusses the current situation and the future of capitalism.

Luigi Zingales is the Robert C. McCormack Professor of Entrepreneurship and Finance and  David G. Booth Faculty Fellow at the University of Chicago Booth School of Business, where he has worked since 1992. He also serves as a fellow at the National Bureau of Economic Research, the Center for Economic Policy Research, and the European Governance Institute, as director of the American Finance Association, and on the Committee on Capital Markets Regulation. From 2005 to 2006, he served as the Taussig Research Professor at Harvard University. Zingales was awarded the 2003 Bernácer Prize, awarded to European economists under the age of forty who have made outstanding contributions in macroeconomics and finance, and the 2002 NASDAQ award for best paper on capital formation.
