Want to get involved in beekeeping? This class is a great beginners class on how to start a hive or just learn more about the ancient practice of beekeeping. For gardeners who want to maintain a hive for pollination or for those who want to collect honey, this class will give you all of the information you need to start beekeeping in your backyard. Very basic knowledge on beekeeping is helpful but not necessary.
This class is BYOB too so feel free to bring your favorite drink for the class too. Kids are also welcome to the class, so bring the whole family!
11am-1pm will be lecture to learn all about beekeeping before we inspect the hives and from 1pm-2pm we will work in the hives! Protective clothing is provided but it is helpful if you wear lighter colored clothes, jeans, longer socks that can be pulled over your jeans and closed toed shoes.
Key topics that will be discussed are:
-Equipment to buy to start a hive
-How to get a colony of bees
-How to introduce your queen to a new hive
-Basic hive maintenance
-What to check for when looking in the hive
-Proper methods for working in the hive
-Anatomy of bees
-In depth understanding of everything inside the hive.
We will be a break between the lecture and working in the hives for tea, coffee and snacks as well honey tasting. There will be lots of handouts for reference but a notebook would be helpful for extra notes.
