Lecture: Mies van der Rohe in Krefeld
Join us at S. R. Crown Hall, Illinois Institute for Technology, for a presentation by Art Historian, Christiane Lange about businessman and art collector Hermann Lange who kept an especially close friendship with architect Mies van der Rohe and the interior designer Lilly Reich. Between 1927 and 1930 this mutually energizing association resulted in collaborative structures such as Lange’s own home, the famous Haus Lange in Krefeld Germany. Lange, who is the great-grand daughter of Hermann Lange, will speak about the ten projects Mies built for the “Krefeld Circle,” amongst them, Haus Lange, Haus Esters, and the visionary Cafe Samt und Seide (Velvet and Silk Cafe).
The lecture will shed light on the history and background of this remarkable series of commissions that survived the Third Reich, against the background of the Deutsche Werkbund and the dynamic German silk industry. One of the most significant designs of the Krefeld buildings, the club house for the Krefeld Golf Club, was never realized. From May through October 2013, a 1:1 model of the Club House will be built on the original site. Christiane Lange will explain the process towards realization of the 1:1 model of the club house and the programmatic events surrounding it.
COST: FREE! Reservations are required in advance.
