David Kilcullen was chief strategist for counterterrorism at the US State Department (2005-2006). He was a senior counter-insurgency advisor to General David Petraeus (2007-2008), where he helped design and monitor the Iraq War troop surge, and was also a special advisor for counter-insurgency to Condoleezza Rice.
Out of the Mountains: The Coming Age of the Urban Guerrilla offers a look ahead at what may happen after the war in Afghanistan ends. It is a book about future conflicts and future cities, about the challenges and opportunities that four powerful megatrends are creating across the planet. And it is about what national governments, cities, communities and businesses can do to prepare for a future in which all aspects of human society—including conflict, crime and violence—are rapidly changing.
