In today’s digital world, most people assume that if they found something online they are free to use it however they want. In most situations, this assumption cannot be further from the truth. This is especially true for open source code. Although open source code is routinely provided without financial hooks, open source code may be associated with contractual hooks that limit how the source code is used, especially in commercial settings. Accordingly, during the workshop we discuss the pitfalls to watch out for when using open source code to develop software. We will also look at other ways to protect software separate from licensing constraints.


About the speakers:
Molly Lawson is experienced in all phases of obtaining patent protection both in the United States and internationally. Her patent prosecution and patent clearance practice is focused on computer software and hardware technologies, including: Imaging systems and applications (including computed tomography and radiographic image creation, analysis, and management)​; Cryptographic and security applications​; Financial transaction processing​; Wireless networks and communication protocols​; Web-based applications and business methods​.​

Edna Basurto is known for her strong track record in patentability analysis and freedom-to-operate searches, providing her an excellent foundation for successful outcomes in patent application preparation. Her technical background in bioelectrical engineering has enabled her to identify patentable subject matter from a holistic description of the system or product related to the following electrical applications: Control circuits for power tools; wired and wireless communication among objects; Object tracking; Control systems for nuclear systems; Control systems and algorithms for mining machines; Wireless charging; Encryption keys; Electrical/electronic medical devices.
