Tax Increment Financing Districts are a BIG deal in Chicago! How big a deal? Would you believe about ONE HALF BILLION DOLLARS in property taxes sucked off the table each and every year?
Join Tom Tresser, lead organizer for The TIF Illumination Project (www.tifreports.com) for an overview of how TIFs work in Chicago and the major public policy issues they engender.
We will review our analysis of Chicago’s 148 TIF districts for 2016. We will review some of the notable scandals and conflicts of interest surfaced over the past years. We will review the history of our public engagement work which has taken us to 51 public meetings in front of over 6,000 people across the city since 2013.
Attendees will share their own experience with community development and neighborhood economic development organizing. We will review recent City Council efforts at reform and brainstorm on what should be done about TIFs heading into the 2019 municipal elections.
All attendees will be given the opportunity to purchase “Chicago Is Not Broke. Funding the City We Deserve” at a 50% discount!
