MENA Monday Night at the Evanston Public Library. The Risk of War with Iran: Will Trump Kill Obama’s Iran Deal? A Talk by Trita Parsi

Northwestern University Middle East and North African Studies

Monday, December 11, 2017 6:00 PM – 7:30 PM

Throughout the presidential campaign, Donald Trump promised to kill the nuclear deal with Iran. Since taking office, however, he has discovered that scrapping the deal would be costlier than he thought. Will he go forth with his promise? If so, what would be the consequences? Will the US and Iran once again be on a path towards war? Can war with Iran be prevented?

In this free public program, Trita Parsi, an expert on US-Iranian relations, Iranian foreign policy, and the geopolitics of the Middle East, will explore these and related questions.

Trita Parsi is the president of the National Iranian American Council (NIAC), a nonpartisan, nonprofit organization dedicated to strengthening the voice of Iranian Americans and promoting greater understanding between the American and Iranian people. He is the author of three books: Treacherous Alliance: The Secret Dealings of Israel, Iran, and the United States (2007), A Single Roll of the Dice: Obama’s Diplomacy with Iran (2012) and, most recently, Losing an Enemy: Obama, Iran, and the Triumph of Diplomacy (2017), all published by Yale University Press.

He has served as an adjunct professor of International Relations at Johns Hopkins University’s School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS), an adjunct scholar at the Middle East Institute, and a Policy Fellow at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars in Washington. He is the 2010 recipient of the Grawemeyer Award for Ideas Improving World Order. He is fluent in Persian (Farsi), English, and Swedish. His articles on Middle East affairs have been published in Foreign Policy, the Wall Street Journal, the New York Times, the Los Angeles Times, the Financial Times, and many other publications. He is a frequent guest on CNN, PBS, NPR, the BBC, and Al Jazeera.

This event is part of the MENA Monday Night series, a partnership between Northwestern’s MENA Program and the Evanston Public Library aimed at expanding the public’s understanding of the MENA region and fostering a forum for questions and discussion. MENA Monday Night events are free of charge and open to the public.

Trita Parsi will also sign copies of his new book, which will be available for purchase at the event.
