José Alvarez was appointed executive director by the Illinois Tollway Board of Directors in April 2019.
He is responsible for managing the agency’s daily operations, overseeing its $1.5 billion budget and leading the implementation of the Tollway’s 15-year, $14 billion capital program, Move Illinois: The Illinois Tollway Driving the Future.
Alvarez is also responsible for leading the Tollway’s more than 1,400 employees in providing a safe, effective and efficient toll highway system and ensuring the highest possible level of customer service for the Tollway’s 1.6 million daily drivers.
Alvarez brings a wealth of administrative and government experience, including leadership positions at the highest levels of the public sector.
Prior to joining the Tollway, he served as chief operating officer and chief of staff for the Chicago Housing Authority. He also has served as chief of staff for the state superintendent of education for Washington D.C. Schools and deputy chief of staff for the chief executive officer of Chicago Public Schools.
Alvarez is also a civic leader, serving as chairman of the local school council at the Andrew Jackson Language Academy, as vice chairman of La Casa Norte and as a member of the board of directors at Trinity High School in River Forest.
