Recent advances in machine learning, combined with the availability of very large data sets, have led to tremendous increases in the ability of computers to solve a number of complex tasks (like recognizing an object in an image, or understanding the structure of a sentence). The success of these machine learning techniques – particularly “deep neural networks” – has led many to predict that they will lead to both radically improved technology, and a better understanding of the human mind and brain. Do these models present a qualitative, or merely quantitative, shift in the ability of thinking machines? And what do their successes (and limitations) tell us about the nature of human thought?
