INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY
GLOBAL HEALTH SYMPOSIUM
On Friday, March 8, 2013, in honor of International Women’s Day, The Chicago Council on Global Affairs will host a half-day Global Health Symposium under the auspices of the Council’s Women and Global Development Forum. The purpose of this symposium is to examine the complex economic, political, geographic, and cultural factors involved in addressing global women’s health. The forum has served as a key convener for many of the thought leaders, advocates, and top policy makers in global health around the city and world who are working to improve the welfare of women, and the symposium seeks to be a culmination of the Council’s programming on women and health issues.
Women’s health issues are interdisciplinary in nature and significantly impact the lives and productivity of women, their families, and communities around the world. The range of topics to be discussed thus includes: maternal mortality and health, family planning, infectious diseases, indoor air pollution, food security, and health equity. The symposium will highlight the breadth of disciplines that are indispensable in addressing global women’s health issues and will represent the variety of talent in Chicago and around the world working diligently on these matters.
Chicago is a hub for healthcare and research, hosting nationally ranked hospitals, including Northwestern University, University of Chicago, and Rush Medical Center; major pharmaceutical companies such as Abbott Laboratories and Baxter; and health-focused nonprofit organizations. The reach of these hospitals, corporations, and nonprofits extends far beyond the borders of Chicago and the United States, particularly in relation to global women’s health. The symposium will capitalize on the Council’s role as Chicago’s leading forum for discourse on global issues by convening top health experts to engage the Chicago community at large on global women’s health issues in honor of International Women’s Day.
