Good Economics for Hard Times

Chicago Council

Abhijit Banerjee, Ford Foundation International Professor of Economics, Massachusetts Institute of Technology

The past decade has been an economic rollercoaster, characterized by negative or slow growth and market turbulence. When done right, economics has the potential to help solve the toughest social and political problems. But after the financial crisis, is good economics enough to provide stability and prosperity in the face of climate change, inequality, and political polarization? MIT economics professor Abhijit Banerjee joins the Council to argue that traditional western-centric thinking has failed to explain how it benefits the average worker and consumer in an ever more globalized world.
