George Packer on Richard Holbrooke

May 4, 2019 1:00 pm – 2:00 pm
The Atlantic staff writer George Packer follows his National Book Award-winning The Unwinding with a biography of “admired and detested” American diplomat Richard Holbrooke. Packer’s portrait, drawing heavily from Holbrooke’s own diaries and papers, reveals details from his early career advising on Vietnam, his strategic triumphs in brokering peace in the Balkans, and his long-term efforts to end the war in Afghanistan. In charting the rise and fall of Holbrooke’s life, Packer tells the story of the last half-century of American foreign policy itself—in all its parallel bravado, idealism, and sheer force, not to mention its equally formidable self-absorption, hubris, and overreach.
